Manic Monday XCIII: World Wide Web Weirdness!!

Jake Bechtold | June 15, 2009

Good Morning once again- It’s Monday, so you know what that means- it’s Manic Monday. Let’s go:

• Facebook’s new vanity URL’s were the highlight of the weekend.
• In fact, 200,000 users added vanity URL’s in 3 minutes (me included).
• Sadly, though, the best one has already been taken.
• Moving on, WWDC was this week.
• The iPhone 3GS was announced, but it’s not as important as the previous one.
• Apple’s super MacBook Pro battery has been extended down the line.
• Safari 4 was also finalized- and was downloaded 11 Million times in 3 days.
• And if you’re looking for an iPhone 3GS, it’s too late to pre-buy; they’re out!
• Moving on, Ubuntu is looking for another milestone: A ten second boot time.
• Microsoft will soon have free anit-virus software. Yea right!
• And this month is the 10 year anniversary of Napster.

And that’s this week’s Manic Monday. I mentioned last week in my WWDC coverage that I would purchase one of the new MacBook Pros very soon. I am happy to announce that I have made that purchase, and it should be at my door by the end of the week. Again, I will keep you posted, and I’m going to try and post some un-boxing photos. Enjoy!

Manic Monday LXXXIV: The Bunny

Jake Bechtold | April 13, 2009

Good Morning- hopefully you had a great Easter weekend (and celebrated the real reason of Easter). But now- on to technology. Let’s take a look with this week’s Manic Monday.

• Gmail: 5 years and it’s still in beta! Here’s why.
• iTunes launches variable pricing (we already talked about this last tuesday).
• CompUSA risen from the dead? No- they are not Jesus of Nazareth.
• BBC to plug BitTorrent downloads.
• And this just in- snow is flying in Hell.
• Apple admits to MacBook cracking- will fix it for free (Good news for me).
• Guilty or Not Guilty? That is the question facing Pirate bay.
• Ubuntu 9.04 boots in 17.5 seconds. Nice!
• Chrome progress is being made on a Linux version. Still no Mac version, though.
• Facebook messes up your GPA? Yea right!

And that’s this week’s Manic Monday. I will be posting all five days this week- so stay tuned for some more great tech content. Enjoy!

Manic Monday LXXXIII: We’re Back!

Jake Bechtold | April 6, 2009

Good Morning! After two and a half weeks of Flood Fighting (okay, minus the second half of last week for rest), Wired For Gadgets is back. And what a better way to start then with Manic Monday!

• Digg’s new product, DiggBar launched on Friday
• Google’s form of an April Fool’s Joke. I thought it was quite good!
• Angry villagers run Google Street View out of town
• U.S. President given power to shutdown individual websites? I don’t think so.
• Time Warner is now following Comcast’s footsteps. Stop the madness!
• Microsoft has announced there is now only one Version of Windows 7. Pheww!
• And Skype is now live for iPhone/iPod Touch.
• But, it’s WiFi only. Is that right? The FCC’s looking at it.
• Moving on, Best Buy Taking Over Circuit City Credit Cards. Uh oh…
• Think Facebook’s photos are too slow? They’ve just fixed that problem.
• Finally, some sad news. Twitter is killing the Auto-Follow feature.

And that’s this week’s Manic Monday. Thank you so much for waiting these last week’s- Fargo has needed the communities help (and I needed sleep). I will also mention the really good possibility that Wired For Gadgets will have a redesign (more like a relaunch) soon, probably next month when the website turns 5. Geek on!

Jake Bechtold | May 26, 2008

Good Morning- here is the US it’s Memorial Day, hence why this didn’t go live until later. That said, here we go:

• Firefox 3 On Track To Be Speediest Browser. Sweet.
• The US to shutdown Pirate Bay on their own?
• EBay Pulls Feedback Option for Sellers. That’s too bad- let’s take another caller!
• Hate DRM? Don’t let Microsoft overrun your home library.
• Best Buy to FCC: “You have no power to fine us over analog TVs”. Yea right!
• On to Apple Stuff, iPhone line forms at Apple’s flagship for absolutely no reason. Hmmm.

Manic Monday XXXVIII: Inflated and Overrated

Jake Bechtold | May 12, 2008

Good Morning once again. In case you’re interested, stamps go up to 42¢ today, which makes today inflated and overrated. On to the news:

• For those of you who are anti-Microsoft, Open-Office 3.0 Beta launched.
• For those of you who love the Internet Archive, it successfully fought the Patriot Act.
• For those of you who think your ISP is throttling your bandwidth, there’s a way to find out.
• For those of you… Okay, I’ll stop.
• The real question is, what can a second Ethernet port do for you?
• The Geek Squad is under fire after a former employee confesses.
• Flash is cool, unless you have epilepsy. And it’s not funny, either.
• The MPAA wants $15 Million from the Pirate Bay.
• The MPAA also wants $110 Million from TorrentSpy.
• The Apple Store is out of iPhones. 3G iPhone coming?
• Comcast to put restrictions on bandwidth? Say it isn’t so!
•Why do I love the iSight? It can save your stolen MacBook.
• And the Zune has officially sold 2 Million. Too bad they stole the market from Creative, not Apple.

• Also, this week they released Windows XP Service Pack 3.
• And according to John C. Dvorak, Vista has 11 pillars of failure.
• Moving on, You’d better hide those files if you’re headed for the border.
- Adobe is opening up their FLV and SWF standards. Cool beans.
• And the MPAA has dropped their case against DVDr-core.
• On to Apple stuff, New iMacs came out this week.
• The OQO can be hacked to run Leopard.
• And their were rumors of a 3G iPhone, but those have been debunked.

Manic Monday XXXVI: Take the train to Happy Town…

Jake Bechtold | April 28, 2008

Good Morning once again. Believe it or not, the end of April is almost here, which means some big tech news to come in May and June. But let’s focus on last week, shall we?

• Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron was released. It’s looks cool (haven’t tried it yet)
• The question is, can your girlfriend use it?
• Intel has cut their quad-core price by almost 50%- in your new machine soon.
• Windows XP SP3 it to hit the Automatic Updates tomorrow. Download Away!
• Should be cool as long as you don’t need a Password that 18770 characters.
• And what about the June 30 XP cutoff? Dell doesn’t care, Microsoft is covering their ears.
• Moving on, The Pirate Bay has hit 12 Million Users.
• Too bad the BitTorrent Throttling ISPs have been Exposed by Azureus.
• On to Apple stuff, the 3G iPhone could be here June 9th.
• Rumor has it Apple’s working on an iTunes/iPhone controller.
• Finally, the IT people have lost their no-Mac battle…

That’s this Manic Monday. I back it town to stay, so things on the site should be back to normal. And I still have no idea where Thursday’s post disappeared to. I guess you’ll be seeing it this week. Enjoy!

Manic Monday XXXV: Back in the Saddle again

Jake Bechtold | April 21, 2008

After my quick leave last week and some much needed sleep over the weekend, I am back. Let’s start this Monday right with Manic Monday.

• Blue Jeans cable vs. Monster Cable- too bad the owner of Blue Jeans used to be a lawyer.
• Believe it or not, May is due to see Holographic Storage.
• Is the American Cell-Phone system all that American? Dvice begs to differ.
• Facebook and Digg have teamed up to allow you to import your Digg stories into Facebook. Cool.
• A U.C. Berkeley student arrested in Egypt saved by Twitter.
• Wanna big MP3 player? How does 500,000 GB sound? (Sounds like a lie).
• Wanna impress your friends? Make a sawed off USB key!
• Lifehacker show how to turn your iTouch into an iPhone with VoIP. Cool.
• Is faster memory really worth it? Tom begs to differ.
• Apple clone company Psystar might not need the courts to be shutdown- Apple’s using tech.
• But we can’t find their offices, so don’t worry too much.
• Looking to propose? Be a real hacker and use Bejewled.
• PayPal is at it again, this time, blocking unsafe web browsers.
• Finally, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer says “Vista is a work in progress”. We knew that already.

That’s this week’s Manic Monday. I leave town again this week, but I should still be able to give you the best in tech content. Enjoy!
