Solve Your Rubix Cube

Jake Bechtold | July 31, 2006

The Rubik’s Cube – a fad of the 80’s. Sadly enough, it’s 25 years later and you still haven’t solved yours. Thankfully, Eric Dietz’s Rubik’s Cube Solver may be able to help you out.

Simply use the online coloring tool to color in how the cube looks on all sides. Then the Rubik’s Cube Solver will tell you all the steps you need to solve your cube.

So if you’ve spent the last 25 years of your life trying to solve your cube (hopefully you gave up 24 years ago and just found it again), then the Rubik’s Cube Solver is for you.

Can’t Remember Your Speed Dial? Try Wallpaper

Jake Bechtold | July 30, 2006

Having issues who you set to a certain speed dial? Lifehacker has the solution.

I can never remember which number (1-9) I’ve assigned for my friends on my cell phone. So I went into Photoshop, made a simple but stylish background and put 9 pictures of each of my friends (from their MySpaces – I shamefully admit) in a 3×3 grid corresponding to their assigned speed dial number!

That works. Something I prefer better (if your phone has it) is voice dial. Then all you have to remember is what you set the contact as.

Recover Deleted Files

Jake Bechtold | July 26, 2006

recoverPicture this: You’re going through your Recycle Bin, and you decide you don’t need any of the files there. You click the Empty Bin button. As you click yes, you see that picture of you and your cousin in the bin. It’s now gone forever. How do you get it back? Use free Windows download “Restoration”.

The app works by scanning your hard drive for sectors containing files marked for deletion and then copying the files to space on your hard drive the operating system has marked as available disk space. In my tests with Restoration, most data recovery is successful. This is especially true when recovering small files like Word documents.

This can be a lifesaver if you really need to recover a file, such as that term paper you deleted the day before it’s due. The catch is, though, that the file may get written over, so recover it immediately!

The New Wireless Mighty Mouse

Jake Bechtold |

mightymouse-wireless

Just a little under a year after the release of the Mighty Mouse, Apple is screaming “Here I Come to Save the Day!” again, with the Wireless Mighty Mouse.

How do you improve on the mouse that has everything? Remove its tail. Mighty Mouse — the mouse that changed the way you scroll — has gone wireless. Now you can take that seamless, touch-sensitive, 360-degree scrolling design with you wherever you go. With its secure, reliable Bluetooth technology, the wireless Mighty Mouse goes wherever you do. Pair it with any Bluetooth-enabled Mac and wireless keyboard to work untethered and uncluttered at your desk, or take your show on the road. Mighty Mouse lightens your load on the go by operating with either one or two AA batteries. That’ll save you lugging a bulky dock around.

But get ready for a price tag, the Wireless Mighty Mouse will set you back about $70. It came out this morning, so the good ol’ retailer should have it by the end of this week. (And in case your wondering, I had to dig for the original release article I wrote)

License Plate Blurrer – Long Live Desmond Llewelyn

Jake Bechtold | July 25, 2006

A license plate blurring device. Sounds like something Q would make in a James Bond movie. Not this time.

Some people who enjoy driving fast have developed a device to blur license plates at the flick of a switch. It was originally produced for participants of the cross country race Bullrun, but is perfect for anybody who just really hates obeying the law. Like bank robbers. And pirates.

No idea if this will ever go into production (odds are that it won’t), but it would be worth seeing in the next Bond movie, though.

USB Egg with Speakers, Card Reader and Hub

Jake Bechtold | July 23, 2006

usb-egg

I’ve learned over the years that having many items on your desktop can make it quite cluttered. Luckily, this new USB device from Evergreen may have eggzactly (pun intended) the solution.

The new USB Egg has a pair of speakers (which with 2-watts per channel, isn’t really headbanging sound), a 2-port hub (I thought hubs had more than two ports) and a card reader that can handle SD, Compact-Flash and Media Stick.

The USB Egg is currently available in Japan, and there’s no word as to whether we’ll see it in the US and, furthermore, how much it’ll cost. Just one word of warning, Don’t try to separate it’s yolk; I’m told it’s not cover by warranty.

Another Great USB Hub

Jake Bechtold | July 22, 2006

Looking for a USB Hub with a squid like design for maximum connectivity? Look no further than the Buffalo BHB-U207 USB Squid Hub.

Buffalo has released yet another tool that could potentially reduce the mess and clutter often associated with the office workspace. The BHB-U207 USB squid hub comes with individual tentacles so that you can connect a plethora of USB-based devices without worrying about losing a single USB port to a poorly designed connection. Unfortunately, the Buffalo BHB-U207 USB squid hub is not powered, so hooking up a quartet of external USB drives to it will be suicide. Just stick with low-power consumption items such as mice, a USB fan, and even a sync cable and you’ll do just fine. Another downside would be the potential mess that could result from all the tentacles.

There are two versions available. A two-port version, which will cost $17, and a four-port version which will cost $21. It also comes in four different colors. No idea when it will be available in the U.S., though it is likely available in Japan (given the site is in Japanese).

iPod travel tip

Jake Bechtold | July 21, 2006

This friday, I shall share one of Chris Breen’s travel tips with you, this time, how to listen and charge at the same time, without a wall charger. We’ll classify this one under “Of Course! Why Didn’t I think Of That?”.

As you undoubtedly know, when you plug an iPod into your computer, it appears in iTunes and flashes its Do Not Disconnect screen. You can plug its video cable into the top of the iPod and the TV, but little good it does you when you can’t get past the Do Not Connect screen to access the play controls. So how exactly does one charge and play an iPod at the same time under such a setup?

Simple. Just click the Eject button next to the iPod in iTunes Source list. The iPod will unmount—thus allowing you to use its controls—but it will continue charging through the USB connection.

As I said, It’s kind of a no-brainer, but still a nice tip.

UPHC Service – Shutting Down your PC Faster

Jake Bechtold | July 20, 2006

I’ve told you in the past on how to shutdown faster with the Registry Editor. Now Microsoft has a download to do managed locked up programs at shutdown.

The User Profile Hive Cleanup service helps to ensure user sessions are completely terminated when a user logs off. System processes and applications occasionally maintain connections to registry keys in the user profile after a user logs off. In those cases the user session is prevented from completely ending. This can result in problems when using Roaming User Profiles in a server environment or when using locked profiles as implemented through the Shared Computer Toolkit for Windows XP.

It’s a very small download, and it just may do wonders for your PC.
