Halloween Project: Mac-O-Lantern

Jake Bechtold | October 31, 2007

I decided I wanted to take a break for today. But rather than not post, I’ll tell you about the Mac-O-Lantern.

With the creative use of spray paint, some epoxy paste, and a little photoshop work, the guys over at Bad Banana Blog took an old Mac Classic and gave it new life as holiday decor.

Sounds cool. If you can’t get your hands on a old Mac Classic, this project might hit the spot. Happy Halloween!

Manic Tuesday: Because Monday Just Didn’t Work Out

Jake Bechtold | October 30, 2007

I felt possessed to talk about Leopard yesterday, and as a result, we will have Manic Tuesday. Here we go…

- To get rid of the Apple stuff first, Leopard Launched (DUH!)
- And guess what? It can install on a PC!
- But Apple still mocks the PC.
- But despite, Apple stock is now higher than IBM’s.
- And finally, Hope you don’t want to buy more than 2 iPhones with cash.
- Moving on, Gmail’s got IMAP (not the Apple kinds)
- Digg may have images soon. Consider it dugg.
- No internet sales tax for another 4 to 7 years. YEAH!
- OiNK.cd got raided and the admin arrested. I’m wearing my Music Pirate T-Shirt tomorrow.
- And finnally, Congress tells Comcast to stop it. They deny every bit (figures).

That’s it for this week- enjoy!

Mac OS X Leopard: Hits the spot (Pun Intended)

Jake Bechtold | October 29, 2007

For those of you who were looking for Manic Monday today, I have delayed this week’s Manic Monday as I need to get this out ASAP. Look for Manic Monday tomorrow. Thank You.

Well, Santa (AKA: the FedEx Guy) swung by on Friday with Mac OS X Leopard. As soon as I came home I instantly installed and have been running Leopard since 3:45pm Friday. So I have spent the entire weekend with Leopard, I would like to give you my initial thoughts.

I did the Upgrade rather than a fresh install. That has seemed to do just fine, with all of my apps (the ones I’ve tested, anyway) working just dandy in the Leopard environment. Unless you need to wipe your system and start fresh, an Upgrade should do just fine. I’ve got plenty more tell you after the break. READ MORE »

The Day of Leopard – How To Get Ready

Jake Bechtold | October 26, 2007

This is it: Tonight, millions of people are going to head down to their local Apple Store and pick up Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard). Others (like me) who pre-ordered will get a neat little present on their door step this afternoon. If you pre-ordered or are going to pick up a copy tonight, you need to make sure you’re ready.

So today’s post is going to show you how to prepare your system for Mac OS X 10.5. Everything I’m going to show you is not necessary, but recommended. We’ll get started after the jump. READ MORE »

Vista Tip: Windows Vista Battery Saver

Jake Bechtold | October 25, 2007

You’ve gotta hate it. Right when you’re just about done with that paper, BOOM!, black screen; You’re battery is dead. Just another 1-4% would have done the trick. Well, you can do just that with the Windows Vista Battery Saver.

This tinny program will save up to 70% of your battery by disabling those nice, but greedy Vista features. Running in task bar with private workset of 5.5M and 0% CPU it will do all work for you, by enabling and disabling customizable features when power source changed or battery power fall under certain percent.

If some of the features in Windows Vista are killing your battery, then the Windows Vist Battery Saver might be worth downloading.

iTunes Tip: Don’t Go On

Jake Bechtold | October 23, 2007

In light of the Leopard launch this Friday, I’m going to try and stay away from Apple related content after today until Friday.

That said, I have a fantastic iTunes tip for you. Case and point: This week I’m running sound for a children’s show at school, which requires sound effects and iTunes. The problem, however, is that iTunes will automatically go on to the next track, which is horrible for trying to run sound effects.

Not to fear, there’s an easy way to get around this. In a playlist, uncheck every song on that playlist. Now when the track is done, nothing is playing. That’s all you have to do.

So whether you’re trying to run sound effects, or just don’t want to listen to the next song, this is a great way to do just that. Uncheck it out! (Pun intended)

Manic Monday IX: Put on the rubber boots

Jake Bechtold | October 22, 2007

Put on the rubber boots because it’s going to be a muddy road ahead. It’s been an exciting week in the world of technology, and this week is sure to be another thriller. Let’s get started…

- Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) is to be released this Friday @ 6pm. I’ll have a copy.
- Leopard has over 300+ new features. I give you a break down on Friday.
- Orange in France will sell unlocked iPhones.
- Also, iTunes Plus music is now 99¢, down from $1.29.
- Moving on, NBC has shutdown their Youtube channel and is starting Hulu.
- Ubuntu 7.10 was released. I might have to give it a try.
- TVLinks has been shutdown and the owner arrested.
- AbsolutePoker may be in trouble for cheating. Naughty naughty…
- And while we’re at it, the RIAA is attacking Usenet.
- People are finally sick of Internet Explorer 6. About damn time.
- Jeff Jarvis says Dell is finally learning to listen. About damn time.
- Finally, midgets small things are great – especially in the PC division.

That’s this weeks Manic Monday. I’m going to let you know that posting may be on the slow side this week due to testing and other miscellanous events. Enjoy your week!

Can’t Touch This: DIY iTouch Dock

Jake Bechtold | October 20, 2007

Today’s iPod Touch tip isn’t really restricted to an iPod touch, but is shown with one. If you need a dock for your new iPod, but don’t want to fork out the money, the good people on Instructables can help you out.

All the parts you need come with the iPod and it is very easy to construct. Basically, you cut a hole in the box and put the dock adapter in the hole. Included is a template for an iTouch, but if you have a different kind of iPod you can do without the template.

Also, if you wish not to sacrifice your beautiful collectible iPod box, you can always use something else, as long as it’s tall enough. The detailed instructions can be found on Instructables, but if you can manage a pair of scissors, you should be okay without them. Enjoy!

Firefox Extention: Meebo Sidebar

Jake Bechtold | October 19, 2007

I talked about Meebo before, and use it on my iTouch on all the time. Now you can expand the Meebo functionality into Firefox with the Meebo Sidebar.

The Meebo Sidebar extension allows you to IM with Meebo from the side bar of Firefox. The extension supports visual IM notifications and drag and drop link and image sharing directly from web sites in addition to other already existing Meebo features—including file sharing.

The Meebo extension is free, should work wherever Firefox does (Windows/Mac/Linux). Give it a try!

Seenly

Jake Bechtold | October 18, 2007

If you’re on Windows, you’re more than likely jealous of PhotoBooth, Apple’s software that allows you to take photos (and apply fun filters) via the built in iSight cameras. Seenly now offers similar features, only online.

Seenly offers a bunch of different effects, including a Lomo 9 effect (where 9 shots are taken in shot succession, and placed in a single frame). Seenly also allows you to save photos, too. If you’re not on a Mac, and want to have a little bit of fun with a webcam you might have, you no longer have the right to complain. Enjoy!
