Safari Tip: Tweak the UI

Jake Bechtold | February 27, 2009

So from what I’ve heard from readers, people love the new Safari, but hate some of the minor UI changes, such as the tabs on the top title bar and the new URL suggestion feature (both of which I love).

But if you’re not a fan of the new (and sometimes crashy) eye candy, there is a solution thanks to our old pal, the Mac OS X Terminal. With just a few quick lines of code and a restart of Safari, all features you find worthless are disabled. Change your mind? You can bring it back just a quick.

Enjoy!

Review: iLife ‘09

Jake Bechtold | February 26, 2009

It’s been almost a month since I’ve gotten the new iLife ‘09. I promised a review right after I got it. Needless to say, I haven’t gotten that far. So, I’m making up for lost time and giving you a review of iLife ‘09.

Since it’s annoucement on January 6th, I’ve been really excited for this new version. Previously, I had been running iLife ‘06. The upgrade from ‘06 to ‘08 just didn’t seem worth it. That said, the upgrade from ‘08 to ‘09 looks worthwhile, making an upgrade from ‘06 to ‘09 even better. I run down each of the four programs after the jump. READ MORE »

iTunes Lyrics Importer

Jake Bechtold | February 25, 2009

You know how much I love to keep my music library complete- that includes lyrics. That said, iTunes doesn’t have a way to automatically import lyrics. That’s where the Senthil iTunes Lyrics Importer comes in.

The iTunes lyrics importer is a simple application written in C# to import lyrics for the songs in your iTunes, using the Lyricswiki’s web services. It has two modes, one updating the lyrics automatically and the other is manual update. You select the songs for which you want the lyrics and press get lyrics.

And away you go. Now, the only catch is this one is Windows only. If you are looking for a Mac solution, try DesktopLyrics. Enjoy!

Safari 4 Beta Now Available

Jake Bechtold | February 24, 2009

Well, Apple is at it again. This time with a new version of Safari. Today, Apple released Safari 4 Beta, for both Mac and Windows.

Here’s some of the new features:
Cover Flow – Just like the cover flow in iTunes and Finder, you can cover flow through your favorite sites.
Tabs on Top – Apple has moved Safari’s tabs to the top for a more uniform look (and a very Chrome-esque look, too).
Windows Native Look and Feel – Apple has also made the Windows version of Safari to more closely match Window, and make it much much faster.
Top Sites – A cool feature I’m looking forward to- Safari renders a mini-page with your top visited sites.
Full History Search – Can’t remember that site you had up earlier? A few quick keywords and Safari will find it.

I am currently using it right now and love it. I’ll be sure to give you some more of my comments about the new version.

Jake Bechtold | February 20, 2009

While putzing around the net the other day, I came across a cool feature on Wikipedia. If you are looking for a great way to kill some time, the Random Article link on Wikipedia is just the ticket.

Located on the left hand side bar, click on the Random Article link, and your Wikipedia journey will begin. Go from Bad Bederkesa, to Keep On Walkin’, to Fountain of the Rosello. You never know where it will take you.

So if you’re look for a great time waster on the internet, the Random Article on Wikipedia should do it. Enjoy!

BenQ announces the nScreen i91

Jake Bechtold | February 19, 2009

If you are looking for an all-in-one computer, but don’t want to splurge for a Mac, perhaps BenQ can help you out- they’ve got a new all-in-one computer.

The new nScreen is an 18.5-inch, 16:9 LCD with an AMD Semperon 210U processor, 1GB of memory, 160GB hard drive, and some other cool devices such as a 4-in-1 card reader, integrated webcam, and an average power consumption of just 30 watts.

BenQ claims the computer is designed to be simple to use, like a television, advertising that users can just plug it in, press in the big volume/power knob, and then surf away (though it really isn’t that easy).

At $517, it’s decently priced. It available now in Taiwan, but there’s no word as to when we can get our paws on it here in the US.

Twitlet

Jake Bechtold | February 17, 2009

As you may remember, last week I told you about Twhirl, the Twitter client. If you’re not so fast to install such a client on your computer, perhaps Twitlet is up your alley.

Twitlet is a javascript bookmarklet for fast updating your Twitter (microblogging service) status. With it’s simple interface (a javascript prompt window only) you can post tweets in light speed.

Just click the button (or the link in your iPod/iPhone favorites menu) and a pop-up window appears where you can update your Twitter status. Include a # with a URL and it also produces a link.

With Twitlet, tweeting just got easier. Enjoy!

Tonight we’re gonna party like it’s 1234567890…

Jake Bechtold | February 13, 2009

Not only is it Friday the 13th, it’s also another weird coincidence with time. The magic Unix clock that’s been counting seconds since midnight on January 1, 1970, not counting leap seconds, will be having some fun. Tonight at 6:31:30PM ET, it will be officially 1234567890 seconds.

Bad luck and ordered seconds; How do you go wrong? And if you miss it, don’t worry. There will be another party December 22, 2282 at 3:13:30PM ET for the celebration of 9876543210.
