De-Crapify your Flash Drive and remove U3

Jake Bechtold | October 3, 2008

As much as I love my 8GB SanDisk Cruzer Micro, I can’t stand that darn U3 Software. U3 is a software bundle stored on a protected partition on a flash drive that emulates a CD-ROM when it’s plugged into a Windows machine.

While it’s cool to have pre-bundled portable apps, some like their own. Furthermore, I run a Mac- which U3 does not work with.

The U3 removal tool comes from U3, so you know it works. The only downside? It’s a Windows app- so if you run Mac or Linux you’ll have to borrow a friends computer to remove it. After removal, you gain 6MB of space and 10-15 sec less for load time. To me, that’s worth the removal.

You just reminded me that I should remove my U3 crap. I have kept it around just in case I wanted to use some of the software, but frankly with portableapps.com you can get all sorts of app that are way better than the U3 ones.

That's just it- U3 is cool, but there is so much out there that is way better.
