iPod Friday: iPod 5G with Video Review

Hello and welcome to iPod Friday. This is a new feature I am starting this Friday (today) and will continue (if successful) through the end of July. Look for an iPod related Gadget or Tip every Friday. Enjoy!

The last couple of weeks, I’ve been giving hints throughout my posts about the purchase of a video iPod I was hoping to get. I finally got one last weekend, and after playing around with it for a week, I’d like to share my thoughts.

Prior to this, I owned (and still do) an iPod Nano. After realizing that I need the video capability and more storage (and after my sister offered me $150 for the Nano), I decided I needed to move on to a better iPod. So I purchased a Black 30GB iPod.

Even just after seeing the thing at a Best Buy or something, you will notice three main differences: Larger Screen, Larger Hard Drive, and Video Capability. All of those of which are a huge plus from the Nano.

After using it this week, one thing I’ve noticed is that the battery life is way lower when playing video (which makes sense). Also, another huge disadvantage is the format of video is supports. There’s only one, mp4 (Don’t worry, I’ll tell you about a converter next week).

Another huge plus is that fact the accessories are backwards compatible with the accessories with the Nano. Okay, most of them. Obviously the cases and the dock adapter will not fit the new one. But the iPod Radio Remote (Again, review coming soon) and others will still fit.

Overall, I say that if you’re looking for an iPod, and $300 is an option, go for the iPod Video. The 30GB goes for $299, and the 60GB for $399. Both are available in both Black and White.
