Cool Beans: Linksys USB Network Adapter

Jake Bechtold | April 1, 2008

NO, THIS IS NOT AN APRIL FOOLS JOKE!!!

You know how I love cheap USB gadgets. This one, I think, tops them all. Upon first look, the Linksys USB200M appears like a USB flash drive. The reality is it doesn’t store a think. It does something way cooler.

Upon further investigation , you notice on the side of the device is a tiny door. Lift up, and there’s a slot. The slot fits a RJ-45- that’ right: an ethernet cable. Plug it in the comptuer and you’ve got a USB ethernet adapter. So, you’ve got yourself a USB network adapter disguised as a flash drive.

Why is this so cool? Beside the fact a machine that’s not networked can be networked in a matter of minutes. If could also be used to do something shady (like hack into a machine that you can’t otherwise get into). Regardless your use, the Linksys USB200m is a hit. Linksys says the device is Windows only, but testing on my MacBook proved otherwise. The Linksys USB200M will set you back around $30.
